Past VFC Program Summary
2003: In the fall of 2003, one volunteer was placed at the provincial Medical Technology College in Suzhou, as a full time English teacher.
2004: In summer 2004, 48 volunteers including 24 college students served in China.
2005: In summer 2005, 43 volunteers including 14 college students served in English programs in China.
2006: During the 2006 summer, 66 volunteers including 16 college students served in eleven different English programs. During 2006 there were 7 volunteers serving as teachers in China on a full teaching load basis.
2007: During the summer of 2007, 32 volunteers including 8 college and 2 high school students served in seven different English programs. Four volunteers served as teachers in China on a full time teaching basis with Volunteers for China as their placement contact.
2008: During 2008, 48 volunteers served in China. Thirteen were on a college student team. Other volunteers served from three to two months teaching English in China. VFC had three full time teachers in China.
2009: In 2009, twenty volunteers served in English programs. Three of the volunteers were college students. One of the volunteers taught a special business English program at a major industrial factory. One volunteer taught at the YMCA in Hangzhou for morning and evening classes to facilitate work schedules of the students. All volunteers took part in English classes or medical English classes.
2010: During 2010, 35 volunteers served in English programs. Six of the volunteers were college students. One volunteer taught at the YMCA in Hangzhou for morning and evening classes to facilitate work schedules of the students. Nine volunteers took part in the Amity Foundation Summer English Program and five volunteers carried out an oral English program for Chinese English teachers in Ning De. Eighteen volunteers took part in English programs in Changzhi, Shanxi. Two volunteers took part serving in an orphanage.
2011: During 2011, 26 volunteers served in English programs. Five of the volunteers were college students. One volunteer taught at the YMCA in Hangzhou for morning and evening classes to facilitate work schedules of the students. Eight volunteers took part in the Amity Foundation Summer English Program. Eighteen volunteers took part in four English programs in Changzhi, Shanxi.
2012: During 2012, 17 volunteers served in English programs. Two of the volunteers were college students. One volunteer taught at the seminary in Hangzhou for a two week pastors’ English training program. Another volunteer taught at the YMCA in Hangzhou for morning and evening classes to facilitate work schedules of the students. Six volunteers took part in the Amity Foundation Summer English Program; both teams serving in Inner Mongolia. Twelve volunteers took part in three English programs in Changzhi, Shanxi. Six volunteers carried out an English Church Camp for 80 high school students in the outskirts of Beijing in cooperation with two other Christian Churches.
2013: During 2013, 11 volunteers served in English programs. One of the volunteers was a college student; another was a high school student. One volunteer taught at the YMCA in Hangzhou for morning and evening classes to facilitate work schedules of the students. Nine volunteers took part in three English programs in Changzhi, Shanxi. Six volunteers carried out an English Church Young Leaders Training Program for over 90 church members and friends in Beijing in cooperation with the Christian Church.
2014: During the summer of 2014 VFC placed a team with Amity Foundation based in Nanjing. The team traveled to Ala Shan, Inner Mongolia for 3 weeks of teaching. Another team was hosted by the Urban Education Bureau in Changzhi. Yet, another team was at the Changzhi Nursing College. Another team taught in Pingshun, near CZ. David again taught in Hangzhou at the YMCA.
2015: There were 11 volunteers teaching through the CZ Suburban Education Bureau and the Shanxi Institute of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering both located in the city of Changzhi. After the 2 week assignment in CZ, some of those same volunteers went to Ping Shun for another 2 week assignment. A team also taught for one week at the local children’s international language school. One teacher was again at the Hangzhou YMCA with one support person.
2016: Twenty four volunteers taught this summer at 5 different locations in the Changzhi area. City teams were at No. 8 Middle School, and at the Urban Education Bureau training school. Teams were also at Chang Sheng Middle School in Lu Cheng, No. 1 Middle School in Xiang Yuan, and No. 1 Middle School in Zhang Zi. One teacher taught in Hangzhou in Geely Automotive English Training program.
2017: This summer 18 volunteers taught at these 4 locations in Shanxi: Changzhi Vocational and Technical College; Youth and Children’s Palace Activity Center of Wu Xiang, CZ; Tun Liu Technology and Education Bureau; and No. 13 Middle School of Changzhi in Lu Cheng. One teacher taught in a high school camp sponsored by CZ Vocational and Technical College. Again a YMCA English program was held in Hangzhou with one teacher and one support person.
2018: Shanxi was the location for 3 English programs with 12 volunteers: five volunteers taught at the Changzhi Urban Teachers College for Vocational Studies; five teachers taught at the Education and Technology Bureau of Li Cheng County, Changzhi, and one teacher edited a new English textbook entitled “English for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Professionals to be used at the Shanxi Institute of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. The Hangzhou program led by one teacher with one support person was at You Zan Technology Company.
2019: Changzhi again hosted 2 separate English programs: 3 teachers in the city with the Lu Zhou Education Bureau and 6 teachers in the countryside with the Shang Dang Education Bureau. Teaching program in Hangzhou was at ANT Financial (the financial arm of Alibaba) with one teacher and one support person.
2020: The global Covid-19 pandemic caused all English programs in China to be canceled until further notice. Only in 2023 did China begin reinstating 10 year visas like the Wilsons have.
2024: After 5 long years, David and Ann Wilson are traveling to China to ascertain if future volunteer English programs are possible. In addition they will make many visits to friends from previous summers. Watch for an update.
